Sonata for Clarinet & Piano- Francis Poulenc

Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) began his work on the clarinet sonata by composing the slow movement in Augst of 1959. After finishing the Gloria, which was comissioned by the Boston Symphony, Poulenc completed the Sonata in the summer of 1962; it was one of his last two works. It was written in memory of Arthur Honegger, a fellow member of the Lex Sixm a musical fellowship made up of the six great French composers of the 20th century. The Sonata for Clarinet and Piano premiered on April 10, 1963 at Carnegie Hall. It was performed by Benny Goodman and Leonard Bernstein, in memory of Poulenc, who had died just two and a half months prior.
